A Story in Every Cup: The Roots of The People’s Blend
Deep in the verdant mountains of Sierra de Flores Magón, the heart of the Mazateca highlands, lies a landscape shaped by tradition, community, and generational know-how. The steep slopes, lush agroforest, and high elevation offer a unique terroir, where coffee trees grow slowly, maturing their cherries in cool mountain air.
The producers behind The People’s Blend are members of indigenous Mazatec communities, many of whom speak Mazatec as their first language- ancestral custodians of the land and its rhythms. Their coffee-growing practices embrace the old ways: agroforestry systems blending coffee with native trees and crops, minimal external intervention, and respect for the natural balance.
Through the work of Ensambles, a dedicated bridge has been built between these remote communities and the specialty-coffee world. Ensambles established a regional operation in the Mazateca mountains, including local warehouses and a cupping lab which enables direct purchase of parchment coffee from smallholders. This supports transparency, traceability, and most importantly: fair payment directly to the producers.
What makes this blend especially meaningful is that it’s built from nanolots produced by women farmers, giving them direct agency over earnings and decisions. Each bag is a tribute to their labour, heritage, and hope for a sustainable future.
In the Cup: What to Expect & Why It Matters
Brew a cup of The People’s Blend, and you’ll be greeted with vibrant acidity and brightness, flavours of red fruits and citrus dancing alongside the soft sweetness of caramel. The light roast respects the delicate fruit character, allowing the terroir and the care of the producers to shine through.
Because the coffee is grown high in the mountains and processed with care (washed), the result is clean and refined- it doesn’t lean heavy or muddy, but rather remains elegant with balance. The notes evoke the freshness of the highland forest, the sunlit mornings in Oaxaca, and the gentle labour of hands that have farmed these lands for generations.
Why This Season Matters: More Than Just Great Coffee
This season’s release of The People’s Blend isn’t just about new beans, it’s about continuity, respect and impact. By sourcing directly from Mazatec communities, paying fairly, empowering women producers, and honoring ancestral farming traditions, this coffee stands as a statement: that specialty coffee can and should mean more than flavor.
Each sip becomes a bridge: connecting drinkers across continents to the mountains of Oaxaca, to the people who nurture the land, and to a vision of coffee rooted in community, dignity and sustainability.
